Overview:
There are two options to back-up and restore your computer files, which are outlined in this document.
- Windows 10 File History
- Microsoft OneDrive for Business Sync
Windows 10 File History
Windows offers a simple backup solution to set up your back-up and back-up now. You will need an external storage device (thumb drive or external drive) that is large enough to store all your user data (C:\Users\username). It must be plugged into your PC. Using the FileHistory “Backup Now” is fast and simple. But additional FileHistory backup OPTIONS in customization do exist.
Backing Up:
- On your school computer, logged in with your school AD network user account, plug in the external drive.
- Select the Start button > Settings > Update & Security > Backup > Add a drive, and then choose an external drive for your backups.
- Select Backup Now
- By default all of your C drive Computer User files are going to be copied to a Folder called FileHistory.
- Note: I was able to copy 4.69 Gig in less than 2 minutes
- Inside FileHistory folder are many subfolders, you will need to drill down to the C:\Users\username
- Example: SQ012345@AD.MATSUK12.US > Computer Name > Data > C > Users > username
- You can be selective in Selecting or Excluding folders and create a Schedule for routine backup.
Restoring:
- Hit Windows Key to open search box, type Restore files in the search box, and then select “Restore your files with File History.”
- Click Restore to save all folders and directories, or look for the file you need, then use the arrows to see all its versions.
- Then you can find the version you want, select Restore to save it in its original location.
- To save it in a different place, press and hold (or right-click) Restore, select Restore to, and then choose a new location.
Microsoft OneDrive for Business Sync
MSBSD Staff have 1 Terabyte of free OneDrive Cloud storage as an active employee. You will need to save your documents prior to your employee separation date (due to retirement or termination) to download your data from the Microsoft Cloud OneDrive and save it to another location (ex. external hard drive storage or local Home PC hard drive). You may already have a OneDrive for Business link on your PC. You can look in the file explorer (C:\Users\username) for a folder called: OneDrive – Mat-Su Borough School District to see if you already have it. Then, remember to make sure you’re saving your computer files to your OneDrive network connected folders to auto Sync backup.
Backing up:
- If you do not have the OneDrive – Mat-Su Borough School District you will need to get the OneDrive Sync APP installed and configured. Login to O365 for Business login portal, that is located on MSBSD Employee Quick links: https://www.matsuk12.us/employees/quicklinks
- Log in with your school account (username example: sq012345@ad.matsuk12.us)
- Select the OneDrive, then click “Sync” from the Top Tool Bar and then “Sync now”
- Set up your specific file folders to have access with your O365 Business account. Then remember to make sure you’re saving your computer files to your OneDrive network connected folders to auto Sync backup.
